Anime World Order Show # 69a – Another Hentai Episode (Only This Part Has No Hentai)

Behold the much-dreaded Show 69: another all-hentai episode! With special guest, Zero-chan from Japanator! Both Clarissa and she will be talking about doujinshi in general. Gerald’s reviewing Cream Lemon, and Daryl’s not-reviewing Wicked City!

…er, well, actually this is just the first part of the show where we don’t technically talk about hentai since the recording ran extremely long. This is just the emails and news…from weeks back. WHATEVER. Now that Otaku USA deadlines have passed, JACON’s behind us (here’s some jerk’s con report), final exams are done, we saw Iron Man, Speed Racer got watched in the theater about two or three times, and Bioshock has been beaten…I guess the subsequent parts of this podcast should come out fairly soon.

You want show notes? You want a reason why it’s been like a month between episodes? Well guess what: all you’re getting is this picture.
Note: filename of picture suggests what happened immediately after said picture was taken.

This part is short by AWO standards (under 60 minutes!), so if you’re hungry for more, you are strongly encouraged to listen to Gerald’s special guest appearance on GeekNights in which he is interviewed for about 80 minutes. Be sure to email them or post in their forum with your thoughts. Note: Daryl is pretty sure that Gerald was actually meaning to reference the cat hair puzzle from Gabriel Knight 3, but it’s GeekNights so no big deal.

  1. Due to the weak show notes, here is TV’s Daryl Surat on Japanese sports television:

    Now your failure is complete.

  2. I am now convinced that there will never, ever be a non-creepy Gerald picture. He’d have to dress in a tuxedo and monocle and be sitting proper-like with a calm and stoic face for that.

As a great man once said, get that weak shit off my track. Not only is that link you posted to a video that I uploaded myself, but it’s also contained within our Youtube channel, which is linked to right on the front page.

    Boo. Yah. Ka. Sha.

  4. Point of order: Great Yamato was a manga series from 2000 that didn’t get animated. The newer show that is THE WORST YAMATO THING EVER is called Dai Yamato Zero-Go.

It’s not just bad, it’s ODIN bad. It makes Yamato 2520 look like a masterpiece.

  5. Oh, so that’s why it’s been a month between episodes. Terrifying. Almost as terrifying as the other kind. The FEMALE!

  6. From what I’ve read on AOD, Gurren Laggan’s sub-only release will be more bare bones while the dual-audio release will include extras and such (box, etc)

Also, thank God I’m using Cablevision for my broadband (30 mbps download / 5 mbps upload)

  7. So is Animeigo still alive and weren’t they going Yawara! sometime soon?

So I really wonder how ADV will survive now that Sojitz is out and they never did anything with Sgt. Frog? I’ve never seen the show but wouldn’t the fact that it has so many Gundam references going over the heads of most who’ll watch it is the reason why the TV deal never came to be?

  8. Wagner is pronounced with a V sound. Vagner.

And Harlock Saga is really weird. It’s a little bit of Wagner, a lot of music written in a similar style. As someone who is way into Fritz Lang’s Nibelungen movies but doesn’t really like Wagner’s “opera chicks having fake orgasms” style of music, it’s kind of interesting but also confusing and bizarre. I’m not sure Harlock and friends are quite the right fit for this rambly ass story that only vaugely resembles the original Nibelungen myths.

  9. Dan: what’s it like being mentally ill, greasy and bloated, and unable to interact with the outside world without your mom pushing you in a stroller?

    Sorry, was that off-topic?

  10. Hum, I’d like to see where ADV have been rumored to drop the Keroro Gunsou licence.

I meen, personaly, it’d be a BOON for me, they’ve been arsing around with that for far too long, but I would like to confirm the kill before I dance on the grave.

    So to speak.

  11. On the subject of “I wonder how long so-and-so anime publishing company will survive?”, in the most SHOCKING of all developments, Bandai Visual USA is ceasing operations.

Why, NOBODY could have POSSIBLY seen that coming.

  12. daryl: To be honest, I was more satisfied with Toei going down than BV, since the former company clearly hated American fans.

  13. Hey! I have been on Japanese TV for, well… more than 8 seconds, I think! I was recorded along with a bunch of other cosplayers back around 1992 for a Japanese TV show called “Naruhodo the World” (sort of like a Japanese “That’s Incredible”) which was doing an episode on Americans interested in Japanese stuff. They had been all over the country recording things like Taiko drum groups and Go players, and then wanted to record cosplayers at Anime Expo. But their schedule didn’t let them make the con, so they flew(!) a bunch of us back out to California from Texas and elsewhere and taped us in a loft studio somewhere in LA. Of additional note – it was at this event where Tavisha Wolfgarth and Rikki Simons met up and started the idea for Tavicat studio.

Another thing I oughta post on Youtube.

  14. Finally, an episode that isn’t a total sausage-fest.

I am now convinced that there will never, ever be a non-creepy Gerald picture.

I don’t see any Gerald pics on the front page. Are you talking about the Paul Chapman pic?

  15. Finally, an episode that isn’t a total sausage-fest.

Technically, Clarissa counts as a girl.

No love for 4chan in the message board poll?

I got your 4chan love right here.

  16. Actually, I could have almost been on Japanese TV.

A crew from Japan was filming the manga section of Forbidden Planet but the thing was they only wanted to talk to female customers.

And as for the news of BV.

NAH NAH NAH NAH. NAH NAH NAH NAH. HEY HEY, GOODBYE!

  17. Galaxy Railways is pretty good, although the first season is substantially better than the second. It ends on a good note and doesn’t really need a sequel.

The second series isn’t entirely unwatchable but seems to lack…a certain something (not just more of a budget, though that’s also true). It’s just kind of there.

And for whatever reason…I have a decent chance of visiting the U.S. later this summer (July-August), so I may get to pick up the first volume of Gurren Lagann and maybe even (gasp) Code Geass, without having to pay ridiculous taxes that make importing stuff a pain. So we’ll see how that goes. At least Bandai Entertainment seems to be doing something right with their new release scheme, so hopefully they’ll prosper.

Aria is supposedly described as a “relaxing” anime series, which may be both interesting and boring, for all I know about it…which is nothing, admittedly.

  18. Seems like a lot of stupid shit has happened within the past week.

    – Due to protests from some Muslin group, both Shueisha and studio A.P.P.P. will be censoring parts of the Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure volume that is said to link terrorism with said group.

    – Though since it was obvious, Bandai Visual USA is going to fold into Bandai Entertainment (so what else is new?).

Apart from that, I guess the only good news to have came out is Bandai Entertainment FINALLY giving us showdates for the teeny, tiny-ass screening of “The Girl Who Leapt Through Time”, and as usual, NY and LA are among three cities sighted, but there’s one catch. Those in LA and Seattle will be BLESSED with a subtitled version, while New Yorkers will have to make due with a dub-only track for their screening (we can only hope it won’t be batshit dumb).

Too bad I’m not in a big enough mood to comment further, after having spent a good heap of cash on some extra gear including an HD TV/monitor I’m using for my PC. Take care guys!

  19. rheinhard: Dale saw your clip, and responded at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/lupinthethird/message/8738
    .

chris: It wasn’t obvious BV was going to be folded-just that it would be out of business soon. To be honest, I’m glad Bandai Japan got the message faster than Toei Japan. But it might have more to do with that gamespot article which said the former company is losing money on arcade games. As for Tokikake, I hope it’s eligible for an Oscar, and that Madhouse will finally get its long over-due recognition.

Shame if things haven’t been that great for that company nowadays.

We can only hope it will.

  21. Was Ranma 1/2 one of Rumiko takahashi’s less popular works then? I’m surprised that Yawara was way more popular than it.

  22. Anon, you’re confusing ‘popular in America’ (esp. West Coast fandom) with ‘Popular in Japan.

Ranma 1/2 was just another endless comedy, while Yawara! spoke to the Spirit and the grand tradition of striving and personal sacrifice.

Even not having any of my magazines from the time at hand I know just from the stacks of ‘bonus pack-in’ items I have that in terms of publicity and promotion, Yawara! far, far outstripped Ranma.

  23. It’s ironic that the Ranma knock-offs like Pretty Face and Midori No Hibi are better than the real thing. You could argue that it’s due to the fact that they have real endings, but I think it has more to do with better character motivations and a lack of repetition. To be honest, I’m actually surprised Ranma does so well in the U.S. at all nowadays.

I think why it works here, and not Japan, is that more people there than here iked it more when it was called Urusei Yatsura. That, and we seem to really go for the shonen martial art stuff more than the Japanese. [But only when it’s got a bunch of gimmicks which don’t involve gratuitous violence. R.I.P. Souten No Ken, I hardly knew ye.]

Or maybe it’s frustration at Hollywood’s inability to do decent teen comedies which don’t involve pie-humping. [Though I liked “Not Another Teen Movie” and “Mallrats”, dammit!] I mean, when you have to rip off Hana-Kimi *and* Just One of the Guys [*cough* She’s the man *cough*], you know you’re in trouble. But speaking of risque humour, when are you going to license the Golden Boy manga, Carl?

  24. I wanted to add that I’m surprised it does well at all nowadays, because it’s tamer than some of the stuff coming out like Negima.

  25. So I finally finished Orguss. It’s still not as impressive as Macross, due to its over-reliance on re-used footage and petty arguments to pad the plot. But unlike Eva, this sucker does pay off, if you endure it until the end. Also, is it just me, or did Armageddon steal most of its shots from the last episode?

  26. Hehe, those early Fast Karate episodes are pure gold! I’ll admit, their recent shows have not been as funny as it used to be. Maybe it’s because their audio quality is too high, or because they no longer record in the same room using the same mic. Perhaps it’s even because they release too many episodes these days, but I feel like some of the magic that made Fast Karate Fast Karate has been lost somewhat. It’s still one of my favourite podcasts, though :).

  27. dan: I saw all of Orguss a couple of months ago. It’s a nice show, but I admit it has plenty of cheese, melodramatic and otherwise.

The recycled animation is a pretty obvious constant (especially during combat scenes), but I thought the production values were a little bit more consistent than those of Macross (where some episodes looked great, and others…really didn’t).

On the other hand…without spoiling anything in particular, the ending left me pretty confused for a while, until I read more about it online and managed to come up with an interpretation that left me more or less satisfied. It even felt like a bit of a cop-out, at first, but I got over it.

That’s usually what happens with endings (or certain parts of the ending, in this case) that can be interpreted in several ways…which made me wish I knew at least a little about what the staff was thinking, but maybe that’s what they intended all along.

  28. OT but I’m a third ways into L-Gaim and I have to say that this is my favorite Tomino san directed anime I’ve seen (Haven’t watched Ideon yet).

I think it’s the combination of great mecha designs and characters (although Amu is quite possibly the most useless, annoying female character ever and I like Lynn Minmay). The slapstick isn’t stupid or out of place either I think.

Part B of show 69 by the end of the week, please?

  29. nj: It’s my theory that the writers never really believed they had to come up with a real ending, since there was clearly more emphasis placed on political alliances and wacky alien species than on progressing the plot. They figured they could ride the Macross bandwagon for what it was worth, which is why they just play dress-up with the characters from the former show, rather than actually make me think I’m watching
something new. But I imagine Orguss started losing toy sales to Votoms, and was subsequently forced into a premature cancellation.

So, continuing my theory, the writers decided to get people talking about the ending, so that they might convince newer fans to watch old episodes and buy more crap. I don’t actually hate the ending, though, since it could have easily gone the Wachowski “V for Vendetta” deep route, and it went for Jodorowski instead. An ending I’d consider to be a cop-out would be in the Cronenberg “A History of Violence”.

  30. dan,

But is she going to pass him the potatoes or not? THE STATE OF POTATO-PASSING IS A MYSTERY!!!

  31. Why all the Elfen Lied hate? If watching children explode like inflatable bop bag clowns filled with cocktail sauce is wrong, then I don’t wanna be right!

  32. I really want to read Swallowing the Earth. A misandronistic Tezuka sounds like an interesting read.

  33. Technically, Clarissa counts as a girl.

Way to piss all over the switchblade futa fetishists out there, buddy. Hmmm, actually…

  34. Nice to hear you once more at DAPC DX, Gerald. I then proceeded to download and watch Hikaruon.

While not the best thing from AIC, certainly light years ahead of anything that company produces today (or as I call it the Tenchi Muyo assembly line).

I miss anime having that ridiculous amount of fluidity that’s rarely achieved in the digital medium.

Already saw those Pink Noise OVA’s already and still hadn’t a clue as to the point of them other than being another curio anthology of it’s time (thought Hikaruon was a parody too). But yes, AIC in it’s heyday long before the Tenchi stuff came into play.

  36. Is it just me or does Gerald look like a redneck version of Norm Macdonald?

I was suprised to hear how Ranma 1/2 was relesed over here!? Not that it was that great of a fucking show!

  37. Dan, your theory about Orguss is totally baseless.

Takatoku was in financial trouble already by the time Macross hit, which got them back out of the red, but they were back in the red and Orguss and Dorvack were expensive, high engineering toy lines.

This had nothing to do with the length of Orguss. It’s pretty obvious when shows are artifically extended (like the way Macross clearly ends twice) or cut short (like how Southern Cross suddenly throws out the slow, character-oriented pacing in favor of drastic plot leaps forward and heavy action and then abruptly ends). Orguss is paced just fine.

I also don’t buy that Orguss’ ending was just made up on the spot like a lot of anime endings. The character arcs wind down properly, the driving conflict is resolved, and especially Kei finally owns up to his responsibility and “corrects” the problem he made in the first place. The ending may be a little amiguous, but it is not out of nowhere like anything written by Chiaki Konaka. I think they were trying to be artsy.

Artland and Nue had proven themselves with Macross and obviously had a bigger budget for Orguss, but it was still an 80’s TV anime budget so of course there’s recycled footage, but it’s nowhere near as bad as the recycled footage in Macross.

    What are you bitching about?

  38. karaoke: “It’s pretty obvious when shows are artifically extended (like the way Macross clearly ends twice)”

But Macross was at least extended in a way which wrapped up all the sub-plots. Orguss is just an excuse for frequent dog-fights.

    “Orguss is paced just fine.”

If you want to sit through characters bickering every other episode about the same thing we already knew about ten episodes into the show, then sure.

“I also don’t buy that Orguss’ ending was just made up on the spot like a lot of anime endings. The character arcs wind down properly,”

But it’s not exactly clear what happens to the earth(s).

“but it’s nowhere near as bad as the recycled footage in Macross.”

The only recycled footage in Macross is in the opening credits.

  39. Dan, you are a dumb motherfucker, you know that?

Macross is replete with recycled footage. The Zentradi scout ship the Macross destroys in the first episode is recycled several times, including in the episode “Love Drifts Away” when Hikaru shoots a Zentradi with missiles. The same brown VF-1A Valkyries die repeatedly. The wedding episode has a ton of recycled footage.

Do you just say incredibly stupid things to try to bait people? Because either you are just stupid as shit, blind, or are baiting. Either way, I am done talking to your worthless, stupid ass. Stop posting in the comments here, shithead.
