Bonus – Our Boring Panel at Anime Weekend Atlanta 2006

This isn’t really an episode. Well, it was until we decided it was cosmically lame. See, it’s mostly composed of the audio to our panel at AWA 2006, and it was pretty boring. Oh well.

Introduction (0:00 – 32:20)
This is our first go at using the Levelator. It seems pretty good, but Daryl’s mic was acting up and so there was a lot more noise than usual in the recording. So despite dire results previously, we used Audacity’s Noise Removal filter to get rid of it. The result is that everyone, particularly Daryl, sounds slightly robotic during the introduction. Still, we answer messages. James from AnimePodcast.net calls in to let us know about how we really need to stick it more to the large retail outlet chains as far as anime pricing goes, we talk about the fatal mistakes being made by ADV Universe and Anime Village, and Walter Amos writes in with a rebuttal to some of the things said in Show 32’s Otakon report with Zac Bertschy. Plus, a mysterious individual writes in to settle once and for all whether Gerald or Daryl emits the most anti-girl rays, and per Carl Horn’s request, Gerald and Clarissa make mention of some of the doujinshi they bought at AWA. The way Daryl sees it, if he’s unwilling to pay $2.50 – $4.00 for a 32-page comicbook, he sure as hell isn’t going to pay $20 for one. Or even $5-$10 if you get a “great deal” on them. Paying money for porno? That is SO pre-Internet.

There are two things YOU can do to get Gerald and Clarissa up to speed on this modern Internet age. The first is to submit reviews of our podcast on iTunes. The second…is to draw AWO doujinshi. In fact, people have been submitting fanart to us for a while. Here are some of them (more as we find them):

Jared and Lindsay, the creators of Peach Fuzz (which is like, syndicated in newspapers and published by Tokyopop), sent us this freaking awesome logo way back when we asked for someone to draw this for us. Man, why don’t we use THIS as our official logo?!

Fred M sent us this back in June, and if you want to see more here’s his Photobucket:

Chris B sent this one to us back in August:

Erin from the Ninja Consultant podcast drew this shortly after Otakon. Despite implications made in this episode, she assures us that “Geraldarame” has NOT gone wee wee in his pants:

Someone mysterious that was probably also Erin drew this picture, which seems to be Daryl Surat vs Dave Riley from Fast Karate for the Gentleman. Clever enough to reference Shin Getter Robo vs Neo Getter Robo? Some credit is due, but not quite full credit since they should in fact be teaming up with one another!

And Carl Horn had this masterpiece commissioned for his AWA room party:

As Jodie Foster said in this movie about aliens that didn’t have aliens in it, it’s beautiful. So, so beautiful.

Let’s News! (32:20 – 44:39)
Yoshihiro Yonezawa, the creator of Comiket, has died, Geneon’s release of Sherlock Hound is going out of print, and Animeigo proves once again that they actually give a crap because Yawara is going to be released 40 episodes at a time. We then totally steal everything that was said on this episode of Otaku Generation with regards to Animeigo. Oh, and despite mentioning it and probably retracting it a few times already, there is going to be more Genshiken. Really. But it’s only going to be three episodes worth.

Boring AWA 2006 Panel: “Conquering the Internet” (44:39 – 1:36:25)
Yeah, this is pretty bad news. Special thanks to Daizenshuu EX and the Ninja Consultants for showing up. Also, other people from other powerful places were present, but bottom line: we talked about podcasting and didn’t really do that great a job. And by “we” we mean “Daryl.”

Closing (1:36:25 – 1:39:54)
Next week is yet another “bonus” episode as Gerald and Daryl interview Marc Handler. Marc has worked on Voltron, Transformers, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Cowboy Bebop, Ghost in the Shell, FLCL, and oh yeah, the dub of Naruto. Believe it!

  1. I’m seriously digging the AWA flier. There is something disturbing, yet strangely appropriate, about drawing Daryl as Misaki.

  2. It’s ironic that you mentioned that Animeplus…you along with them, were the first podcasts I listened to, but yours had something more…to say….primal, just like Getter Robo. Still listening now, I’ll say some more later.

  3. When I went and bought the world’s only Evangelion/Haruhi crossover doujinshi from the Hen Da Ne Crazy Clover Club expert at AWA, he gave me a lecture about how the youth these days don’t want to pay for porn and are providing a drain on the industry (which is why their profit is from those yaoi paddles, I guess). It was probably my fault for owning a Team 4chan shirt, but he might want to kill you anyway.

  4. Your comments on Manga Video’s Astro Boy 1980 DVD box prompted me to look at my own copy and, sure enough, the box says nothing about also including the original Japanese audio and English subs.

One correction, though-you claimed that there were only 51 eps instead of 52 because one wasn’t dubbed, and that the undubbed episode is included sub only. How I wish this were the case.

Actually, there are only 51 episodes because the first two (half hour) episodes were edited down into a single (half hour) episode. I fact, all the episodes were edited to match the dub, though fortunately no others to the extent of the first two (it even appears that some weren’t edited at all-when I have the time I’ll compare with my Japanese LD box).

Some of the edited scenes are included as extras, but not all. Among the missing: A scene from ep 44 (J-45), “Uran-chan no Kami-sama” (“Uran-chan’s God,” retitled “Uran’s Quest” even in the sub) where (Atom’s sister) Uran-chan, after reading about different religions, imagines various deities dancing to an altered version of her theme song (including Jesus using a giant halo as a hula hoop), the closing host segment with a live action Dr. Tezuka from the final episode (though the opening one is included), and, sadly, anything cut from the first two episodes.

If there is a “missing” sub-only episode on these DVD’s, I can’t find it (if I’m wrong, please tell me where it is-this is one crow I would gladly eat).

A few comments about Sherlock Hound: I’ve noticed that the minute cut out of the Japanese versions is usually stuff like Watson being stupid (such as asking what a chisel is) or the characters spelling everything out painfully clearly to the audience. That said, I actually find the English version (can’t really call it a dub if it was recorded first and the animation was timed to it) tolerable and (bad English accents aside) totally non-cringemaking (from me that’s a compliment!). I should be able to watch it with my nephews and suffer no ill effects. Good thing I filled the holes in my collection (consisting of two DVD’s I found at Big Lots) with Right Stuf’s Geneon sale and a used copy from Amazon…

  5. in high school i attempted to grow the biggest sideburns possible as i’m blessed with huge curly facial hair. i never achieved my goal of azimov-level muttonchops, but i recall those hairy days with fondness… i should start growing them out again.

  6. I am saddened. What kind of terrible world do we live in where people can’t make a living selling other people’s comics based on unlicensed copyrighted characters? We’re through the looking glass here people!!

  7. Your last episode inspire me go beyond what my eyes can see and … now i am drawing a doujinshi on in the middle of class 😛

  8. I totally want to see that Macross doujinshi.

Plus I really enjoyed your panel, even though I could hear a couple of places you edited it. I thought it was gonna be hardcore no edits? Haha. Anyhow, lots of good advice that I totally have been failing to follow in my podcast that has 6 episodes worth of material out of which I have edited 1 episode.

Man. Editing is really, really tedious. If I got the levels right to begin with, maybe I wouldn’t have to do it with this finetooth of a comb.

So I’ve been using Skype too (bad idea, I know, my friend lives on the other side of the country), but the program I used to record the conversations was Pamela. What was the program you used called again? Total Recorder or something? Does it record all three voices into one wave file or what? I would like to be able to adjust levels without fucking editing every instance of just one of us speaking…

  9. Even though the majority of doujinshi are indeed what the British call “self-help books,” the *culture* of doujinshi is based around the making of physical works for other fans. Doujinshi circles are, by and large, publishers–meaning they make something on paper between two covers, meant to be read with at least one hand. It’s similar to the manga or comics industry, where there’s a lot of scanning going on, but the customer is someone who’s actually into getting the physical publication. So being into doujinshi, as such, means sharing in that attitude. There’s plenty of free filth that Japanese artists make available on their sites, but again, to be into doujinshi means to spend money on this boutique (it has never pretended to be otherwise) industry. I might add that plenty of professional manga artists supplement their income with doujinshi, quite often of other people’s characters.

For years, Tora no Ana, the doujinshi chain, has carried the back-cover ad on SHONEN ACE magazine, many of whose manga, of course, are made into doujinshi sold in Tora no Ana. As I like to say, if the American approach to copyright is better, and if fan copying is bad for the industry, then can someone explain why Japan has the larger professional comics industry by far?

It was quite noticable at first (having had that box as well).

    Ahhhh! That sounds so cute!

the closing host segment with a live action Dr. Tezuka from the final episode (though the opening one is included),

Wonder why they didn’t bother giving us the ending when they already showed the opening? Seemed also cute to see Tezuka do something that awfully reminded me of Fat Albert or perhaps Mr. T with the live-action bits that were seen in them.

and, sadly, anything cut from the first two episodes.

Sad they couldn’t even show us Astro’s first brush with Atlas.

I couldn’t tell at all personally. Worst I did was download a fansub of those first two episodes instead.

A few comments about Sherlock Hound: I’ve noticed that the minute cut out of the Japanese versions is usually stuff like Watson being stupid (such as asking what a chisel is) or the characters spelling everything out painfully clearly to the audience. I had first exposure to Sherlock Hound from those “Just For Kids” tapes that were around in the 90’s, so I was already used to those moments anyway. The series was co-produced by TMS with Italy’s public broadcaster, RAI in the early 80’s. The initial designs were done by Marco and Gi Pagot, whose parents had produced some of Italy’s popular cartoons in the past like “Calimero”. The series was initially produced with Miyazaki on board around ’81 before the Estate of Arthur Conan Doyle put a clamp on their unfair use of the creation, and Miyazaki moved on to other projects like Nausicaa, with TMS finishing the series a few years later with a new staff doing the remaining episodes.

Just to remind people, here’s that stupid kid who appeared on every one of those “Just For Kids” titles (in shitty EP speed quality)!

All that just to remind us of the tracking control on our VCR (since most tapes in EP mode were proned to such terrible receptions and what-not). If some where lucky to find it, there’s a full preview tape that I think has just this kid bringing up promos for titles like “Vengence of the Space Pirate” and “Macross in Clash of the Bionoids”.

I envy you. My nearest Big Lots location offers SHIT! I barely find any anime whatsoever at that store and hardly bother to ask them to get some since I know they just get whatever is sent to them, plus I don’t really bother to go there anyway unless I had to pick up a quick birthday/xmas gift.

I wish I did! I personally would’ve loved to have that one Wacky Races doujinshi Gerald picked up!

  12. I personally did not find this episode boring at all! I actually learned something I wasn’t thinking about before, and now I might not be as hesitant to do a podcast of my own, or perhaps do an AWO doujinshi with the “How to Draw Manga” kit I had to get with the nibs, paper and all that junk. Good job as usual!

Love to hear from Marc Handler in the next episode. While I was just surprised to see the kind of shows he did wrote for in the past, a very obscure one I wanted to note (though of the non-anime persuasion) was working on a dub for a Dutch-made animated feature, “The Dragon That Wasn’t (or was he?)”, which drove me to find out more about Marten Toonder than I felt I needed to know (part of the film was actually completed in Japan apparently), and begged a friend of mine in the Netherlands to send me a DVD copy of the original version a while back. Would be neat to listen to the guy who worked on “Denver the Last Dinosaur”. 🙂

  13. Funny how you said that you seemingly lost listeners because of all those flyers at Otakon… I must be the only person to pick things up from there and consider visiting it.. (Or else it might just be the back of my brain telling me “Hey! Free stuff!” )

I haven’t found very much either, and I’m pretty sure I’ve cleaned the three stores in my area out of anything worth watching (not to mention all the similar Big Lots!-type stores, none of which had much either…).

Sad they couldn’t even show us Astro’s first brush with Atlas.

Nope. The icebergs approach the ship, Atom acts all eye-blinky mind-controlly for no apparent reason again, and the icebergs then either just go away or he somehow stops them by flying around (too lazy and frightened to check right now).

    Ahhhh! That sounds so cute!

I’m thinking of putting it up on Youtube or Google Video or something, once I finish upgrading my computer (or maybe starting the “Blasphemous Images In Anime” video podcast…).

  15. Just thought I might let it be known, that I was listening to this while in the study hall, and the second that clown pistol went off, I literally landed on the floor with my sides in pain laughing. I actually did not know that Erin(sp) and Noah from Ninja Consultants was at AWA. Don’t they live in New York or someting though?

Personally, I think that this episode was not boring at all. It was like an AWO: Behind the scenes in a way. Still, a great episode.

And just for the heck of it, I had my friend listen to the Otakon episode which was just Gerald and Daryl with Zac, and she told me that Daryl gave off more anti-girl rays, if that counts for anything.

Yeah, often stores like Big Lots hardly interested me given the type of stuff they get and the sort of cheapy dirtyness I can never get out of my mind.

Growing up, my mom at one point had to do her shopping at ALDI, that place just gave me the creeps! It was like, the end of the world or some other natural/man-made disaster was ocurring and everyone just had to go stock up and bag things quickly before it’s too late. I just never like to think of those things.

You just want to know whose idea was it to edit those two episodes in the first place (or did Tezuka himself had a say in it)?

Still, I found watching the series enjoyable, and only wish some channel in the US did carry it 20 years ago like Nickelodeon or whatever.

I’m thinking of putting it up on Youtube or Google Video or something, once I finish upgrading my computer

Too bad I could do it right away with my setup!

I would LOVE downloading that on my PSP to keep me company! Sounds so original and deserved.

  17. I actually made a digital rip of the Celebrity Just For Kids! preview tape if anyone wants to see it, but you gotta come up with a decent way to host it. Yousend it = worthless.

    I often use Megaupload.com.

  19. For the record, we don’t threaten to kill our customers at conventions over downloading. We have more shady people do that for us. 4chan folks are our “friends” kthxbye. >:)

Good podcast btw. I imagine I will be a regular listener to this.

Yes, I know AWA was 3 months ago…
