Anime World Order Show # 69b – Setting a Record For Usage of the "R" Word

The hentai hoedown that is Show 69 continues, with our special guest Zero-chan from Japanator. Gerald reviews Cream Lemon and Daryl doesn’t review Wicked City so much as synopsize it scene by scene so you don’t have to see it. Psst: see it.

Watch this space for special pictures. Work-safe ones, even. Maybe.

Review: Cream Lemon (0:00 – 32:21)
Gerald takes it upon himself to review this decades-long, massive anthology of monster-creating insanity that gave rise to Project A-Ko. Since each part of Cream Lemon is its own separate story and fits into its own genre, the decision is made to only talk about some of the better entries in the series. Somehow while discussing the finer details of it all, we end up making allusions to Firefly as well as jars containing the tears of neglected children. Also, angel’s blood. And Transformers. Can’t forget those.

“Review”: Wicked City (32:21 – 1:23:12)
Look at the running time of that segment. You could just actually go and watch Wicked City in that amount of time, but then you run the risk of someone walking in and seeing you watching it. You can’t possibly pretend you’re not watching Wicked City, but with this audio review, you can act like you’re listening to something respectable! In keeping with the previous review of Demon City Shinjuku, a scene by scene breakdown ensues. Normally this sort of thing would be edited down. NOT THIS TIME. Total number of FALCON PUNCH-es thrown in this anime: three.

Our hero Taki Renzaburo is just too freaking cool to worry about the little things in life, like how he’s been FREAKING IMPALED THROUGH THE STOMACH
Makie would be totally radical if not for the fact that she’s a Kawajiri female and therefore gets brutally raped within 30 seconds of this image capture. This statement is true regardless of what image of her is used. Notable pornstars sporting Makie’s skin complexion: two.
Yoshiaki Kawajiri is a God when it comes to character designs. Why, there must be at least 30 points of douchebag articulation visible in just this frame alone.
In the name of Jesus, Fortenberry casts out the demon of elbow spikes! All that remains is for Clarissa to go to the purity ball! Because nothing is more effective for contraception than a ring and a card. Except for well, actual contraception. Also, molars in the pudendum.
As you can see, Wicked City is a sophisticated and classy adult erotica thriller that services a niche which mainstream porno does not. Therefore when you purchase this on DVD you should do so by clicking here. Talk about shameless advertising. Let us know when you’re ready to buy that HDTV or PS3!

Part 3 featuring Clarissa’s doujinshi primer is already edited and ready to go, but we’ll let you all contemplate the grim nature of this part for a few days first before springing that one on you.

  1. The Wicked City review is enhanced by the fact that you can hear Clarissa eating as she comments on all the horrible things being described. And on the subject of of Koike and rape, what hasn’t DC Comics tapped Koike to write a Dr. Light miniseries? It’s the Western comics character he was born to write.

  2. The first volume of Urotsukidoji was decent, but then it drags out in later installments, because they can’t decide whether to be dark or ecchi. I think the fact that the sexual content didn’t just seem random or obligatory was what made it unique for its time. I will agree that Wicked City is not only better than it, though, but also better than Ninja Scroll, since the latter anime is basically a feudal ninja movie directed by Michael Bay. I do like NS more than most Michael Bay movies, though, but only because I don’t feel like I lose my IQ sitting through it. Oh, and Wicked City probably has Macek’s best dub. The guy playing Taki in the Japanese track sounds like he’s twice the character’s age. Oh, and I think you’re confusing the motorcycle chick from Midnight Eye Goku.

The live-action WC is tolerable, but utterly pointless, and makes me wonder why Tsui Hark didn’t just direct Lupin and Initial D as he originally planned. Oh, and I hope Clarissa mentions Sexy Losers and Ecchi Attack in her dojin podcast.

As for Kawajiri, I mentioned it in another thread, but what I admire about him is the way he takes action in a different direction than most directors. Even Guillermo Del Toro owes him one for lifting scenes from Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust for Blade 2. And Zack Snyder ripped off that raining arrow scene in 300.

frank: I’m still waiting for his Wolverine comic.

Oh, this is OT, but it looks like Satoshi Kon liked Soylent Green and Omega Man and Shaun of the Dead. ^^

Anyway, to add to the theme, there’s another trademark vulgar audio clip from George Carlin at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3av_qRR_DWc
    .

  3. And I generally liked the Highlander anime, w/ the exception of that dude he fights in the beginning. I’m surprised that the hardcore Highlander fans (i.e. the people who saw the tv versions) love it, but everyone else hates it. In addition, to be fair, we still haven’t seen the director’s cut of it yet. BTW, the original film is rumoured to be getting a remake. Oh yeah, surprised you didn’t comment on the live-action Wicked City from Hollywood allegedly in the works.

As for why I like the WC anime, it’s because there’s a satirical edge to it not many fans appreciate, and I’m also into horror-comedy in the vein of Braindead. Plus, the sex scenes add to an atmosphere of creepiness combined with guilt-filled voyeurism you just don’t get from other similar films(anime or otherwise) which either try to make you puke[i.e. Cool Devices]; or they try to objectify the women, rather than give them their own voice in the matter.

Think about it this way. The guys who attack Makie are portrayed as nuisances who don’t succeed in dominating her, in spite of their actions. She says it best when she says that one guy can never have her heart. And the female demons are the ones who have more power than their male counterparts, who Taki wipes out without batting an eye. But he and Giuseppe, with all their gear, still succumb to the female characters. So when you look at it that way, WC is probably the first real production which titillates, but has a feminist motif to it. I doubt that’s why other fans go for it, but I guess they might agree that they’re tired of the same old cliches, too.

P.S. Godzilla 2000 was lame, and the best recent one is Megaguiras.

  4. Um, what else? I don’t get why people say they like anime, because it gives them experiences they can’t possibly get in live-action, and then they complain when anime directors choose not to play it safe by shooting solely action sequences you can get in live-action. Wicked City without the risque content is basically the low-budget(even by his standards) Tsui Hark movie; and who really enjoyed that one?

  5. Of course, I might come off hypocritical, because I hated Kite’s sexual content, but then I argue that one sucked in general, and was done better in Golgo 13: Queen Bee, so….

  6. Yeah, well, this was one of the few AWO podcasts I listened to in its entirety.

So you mean to say that all this time you’ve been shitting up thread after thread after thread without ever actually listening to the show? Thanks, I’ll remember that!

“Dan” must be short for “Daniel Zelter” after all!

  7. I read the summaries, which is why they’re there, I assume.

Well, you assumed wrong. Reading whatever is hastily written on this site and interpreting it as a substitute for listening to the show which takes hours to record and edit is not only colossally stupid and far exceeding the realm of simple common sense, it’s something I’ve already said not to do in the past.

What you’ve been doing for the last several months is akin to purchasing Otaku no Video then only reading the liner notes without ever actually watching the anime itself. The sheer obnoxiousness of this is amplified by the fact that you have left more comments here than all three hosts of AWO combined.

Since you don’t seem to get it when every other post you make is deleted, or when person after person tells you to stow it after you spew out one completely unfounded and unsupported assertion after another, I can only conclude that you’re deliberately just trying to bait people into off-topic arguments. You want to argue with folks on the Internet over whatever happens to be on your mind? Do it somewhere else. Take it to ANN, AoD, CollectionDX, or any of the podcasters who have forums with subsections specifically set aside for “general discussion” such as GeekNights, Viga the Otagal, Otaku Generation, or Anime Pulse.

(Apologies to anyone who wanted to vote for AP in the latest poll; I forgot to include them, which is dumb since their forum is really popular.)

Jaime, I deleted your post because you pretended to have listened to the show, when in fact you just skipped to the end so you could be the first person to comment. AGAIN. I know this because the time between the post and your commenting on the end of the show rendered it physically impossible for you to have heard the entire thing even if you listened at 200% speed. Which I would advise against since I talk pretty fast and shorten the pauses between every single sentence while editing.

Linkin Park? Bravestarr? What the hell is going on in this show?

THE ATOM BOMB IS ABOUT TO DROP

  8. Nice review for Cream Lemon there Gerald. Personally, I would have wanted it to be a bit longer. You pretty much liked all the same ones I did (Although it’s called Dream Colored Bunny, not Multi Colored Bunny). I’m curious as to which ones you didn’t like besides the Ami related ones.

    Other thoughts-

-You didn’t mention the Escalation saga. That one next to Ami was also one to have the most episodes related to it.

-White Shadow was drawn and directed by Satoshi Urushihara. That’s why it looks as good as it did.

-AIC did some of the episodes as well.

-One that I liked that wasn’t mentioned was the one with guy’s girlfriend who died and then meets a girls that ends up being his reincarnated girlfriend.

-Those new ones from a few years ago are AWFUL. There’s not even any erotic content to justify the name.

-Media Blasters looking to license it is totally true even though John Serrabeila (sp?) said that the ages of girls might cause some problems.

BTW is there a torrent for Gonad the Barbarian?

I could never get into Wicked City. I’m not sure why. I think Urotsukidoji was awesome but somehow WC
didn’t. For one I think it was longer than it needed to be (plot seemed artificially extended).

  9. Dammit, I wanted to hear you guys talk about that shocking news!! Fine, I guess I can wait.

I don’t think you mentioned this in your review, but the Wicked City novels are actually coming out starting in October, courtesy of Seven Seas (wow, Seven Seas is actually publishing something GOOD!? Impossible!!).

I think that Kawajiri has a bit more directorial merit than simply action-packed rapefests. Didn’t he direct the X TV Series? I haven’t actually seen that yet, but I’ve heard very good things about it. And I believe he directed one of the segments of The Cockpit as well…

  10. I have most of Cream Lemon sitting around somewhere. Which episodes should I watch to maximize my enjoyment of the review? (Yeah, that’s going to sound wrong no matter how I phrase it.)

  11. Kawajiri keeps making the same movie over and over, and I keep watching. What can I say? I’m a simple man.

And on the subject of of Koike and rape, what hasn’t DC Comics tapped Koike to write a Dr. Light miniseries? It’s the Western comics character he was born to write.

If he did, he’d probably use the Japanese chick, Dr. Light that showed up during Crisis. The kids, they love the futanari.

  12. Hey GATSU, I think I hear GULIFISU calling. Yeah, he says it’s time to get back to lording your vast knowledge of cartoons and comic books over the teenyboppers at ANN and leave us alone.

  13. Haven’t seen that many Cream Lemon episodes (the first two, then White Shadow, Pop Chaser -only after Gerald first mentioned it during some other AWO show from long ago-, and the Mako two parter), including one painfully dubbed series of clips (from the previously referenced White Shadow, in fact) which I didn’t actually identify as part of Cream Lemon until much, much later (maybe when vz first mentioned watching it?).

I’ve seen screen shots of others, but the art quality and character designs do vary a lot (though many seem to share the same basic physical characteristics, which are usually hard for me to appreciate), what with all the people who worked on this and so forth…may or may not watch some more at some point, but probably not missing too much.

As for Wicked City…fun segment, but I probably should finally sit down and watch the thing all the way through, after all the…well, “hype” probably does still apply. Or not.

It’s one of those anime productions I skimmed through at some point, but wasn’t actually intending to watch (Ninja Resurrection -not Scroll- is another, but not even the potential laughs would make me watch that again, even in “skim” form, no sir…it burns, like acid, that one)…so I didn’t.

My memory of Wicked City was basically limited to still images of either the Spider-Lady (who could forget her?), weird monsters and tentacles, the shifty old man doing one thing or another, or Maki/e -didn’t even remember her name or that of anyone else until this podcast, sadly or happily depending on how you view it- being molested/raped.

Kawajiri’s art is nice, as always, but he really needs to (exclusively) provide character designs for more traditional shows, movies or OVAs, hopefully ones with less a)weirdness and b)rape…but Highlander doesn’t sound that interesting (saw the first two movies and random episodes of the TV show, nothing else), even though I wouldn’t think it has much of either anyways. Oh well…maybe some other plain dumb action movie may come along and I’ll catch that.

  14. Gerald-Where’d you find out about those unreleased Cream lemon concepts? I’d like to see those.

Nobuteri (sp?) Yuki huh. I guess these fairies had quite the pointy noses. Maybe they were going to have penises for noses.

  15. Here I was, thinking for the longest time that Cream Lemon was one long story. I must have just read about that incest series and assumed that was the whole thing and it kept getting remade.

I was honestly hoping Gerald would go into detail about the weird 80s plots he said were plentiful. Hearing you guys discuss and react to bizarre shit like that ts one of the most entertaining things on the show.

I’ve wanted to watch Wicked City for a long time, but I’ve discovered that I’m a pussy when it comes to the tentacle genre- I watched Overfiend and felt genuinely nauseous for a while afterward. Maybe I should just see if someone has a clip of that insane-sounding action scene somewhere.

I would really, really like to hear just where that “dressing up as a baby as the bomb drops” shit is from. It sounds like a Koike level of insanity.

  16. I bet I know which one Gerald found repugnant.

The one called “I Guess So” about the young man that finds a gun and rapes whatever girl he sees. Supposedly was based on a manga that was based on a TRUE story. Maybe?

One of the most unusual ones was ‘Visions of Europa” where this girl who’s pretty much asking for rape by wearing this transparent/shear black dress.

The Black Cat Manor one took place during WWII.

  17. Too bad I don’t feel like contributing to the delinquency of minors, but I bothered to make AVI’s of my copies of “Search for Uranus” and “Gonad The Barbarian”.

  18. YES!!

    I must see those. Awesome!

So that shitty company that released the Ami ones, that wasn’t officially licensed I gather?

  19. Chris: You have to make a torrent for those! My anime collection simply won’t be complete without them!! Don’t worry, I’m not a minor, so it’s all good, haha.

I also second the request for the torrent of Final Flesh (wow, never thought there’d come a day when I’m actually begging people to make torrents of terrible pornography…).

  20. Daryl, I think you are right about the sex count in Wicked City. I watched Wicked City some time ago, and I remembered it was not a total waste of time (had some good action). But I totally didn’t remember that it had so many rape scenes:P

To this day I have never seen Overfiend, but I should clarify that the one action scene where I took the two “FALCOWN PAAAANCH” screengrabs from is not the only good scene in the movie. There’s a lot of neat action scenes like that sprinkled throughout, but the problem with Wicked City is that even though it does a lot of things really well for an action omvie, it’s all colossally overshadowed due to the fact that poor woman gets raped and brutalized so many times. As with the supermajority of Japanese porn, animated or otherwise, I personally don’t find this erotic or stimulating in the least; I just feel really, really terrible and think “SOMEBODY HELP THIS PERSON,” much like how Dave Riley thought to himself as he was watching that part in Crank with the sewing machine.

(Incidentally, that has always been my worst fear with regards to using sewing machines, and to this day I have never used one in my life.)

This line of thinking actually relates to my current videogaming experience, too. Despite my several years of vocal opposition to the 3D fighting game genre, I’ve found myself owning a copy of Dead or Alive 4. My complaints about this game more or less apply to every single major 3D fighting game franchise (Tekken, Virtua Fighter, Soul Calibur past part 2, etc), and these complaints have not really changed in the last ten plus years: despite the fact that these games do a lot of things quite well–good graphics, interesting moves/styles, lots of background interactivity, etc–it’s all COMPLETELY invalidated by the fact that the damage scaling is ABSURDLY high. What does it matter that you have 90+ moves when the rounds end in 15 seconds because you can do 50%+ damage just by hitting “punch, punch, punch” or something similarly simplistic? And I’m not even exaggerating; the simple “poke” manuevers that you’d typically use to set up the more impressive stuff are themselves far, far too damaging, which practically overrides/invalidates all the potentially cool stuff.

If you could just turn the damage down far further than the options allow such that a round could last a minute or two and the basic strikes did minimal damage compared to the heavier ones, I’d like them all a lot more. But you can’t. There were this Japanese wrestling game for Dreamcast called Giant Gram 2000–it was All Japan Pro Wrestling featuring their then-current roster of the best heavyweights in the world, plus various legends like Giant Baba, Rikidozan, The Destroyer, and Bruiser Brody–that was built using the Virtua Fighter engine (but had a rock-paper-scissors style of priority/attack types similar to DOA). These games would be superb if not for the fact that they’re ports of arcade games and the damage from the minor strikes is so high that it’s all over in 2-3 minutes, even during the modes where you’re supposed to reenact classic matches by doing the same moves as what actually happened. If they’d kept the gameplay exactly the same only made the damage such that a singles match takes 15-20+ minutes, I would still have my Dreamcast hooked up just for that.

And that is why damage in 3D fighting games and rape in Japanese porno are one and the same.

  22. To this day I have never seen Overfiend, but I should clarify that the one action scene where I took the two “FALCOWN PAAAANCH” screengrabs from is not the only good scene in the movie. I know how you feel about it. This is probably why I hadn’t gotten around to watching Wicked City in the first place since that sort of thing wasn’t my thing (as with most anime that was being pimped in the 90’s were).

(Incidentally, that has always been my worst fear with regards to using sewing machines, and to this day I have never used one in my life.)

Heh, I tinkered with one once, but was never given much education over it (nor had taken Home Ec. either), I’m still pretty OK with a needle and thread when it comes to mending clothes I don’t feel like throwing out.

In the end, it’s all mashing the buttons at the right combination/moment to score. Some games I never put too much thought into unless I feel the need to strain my eyes at the instructions but outside of it, I like to do things blind and see where it gets me.

Those games are just trying to be accurate to real life. For some top fighters every strike does major damage. For example, Kimbo Slice turned his opponent’s ear into hamburger last Saturday.

That’s the way I go through life.

  24. The only hentai i’ve ever been repulsed by was Battle Can Can. I’m not sure if it was the ugly art style (imagine badly drawn versions of Fuko from Lupin III) or the fact that three out of the five main female characters get killed in the most horrible ways imaginable, including one girl getting torn apart (groin to torso) by an alien with a penis for a head. Thank you Media Blasters, bravo.

I’m thinking of watching Cool Devices though.

So what’s more anti feminist, gruesome hentai or lolicon moe?

You guys should do a hentai show once a year I think.

  25. Speaking of crap, I just downloaded and am still seeding the Panzer Dragoon OVA:

    http://www.mininova.org/tor/1160314

This is the so bad it’s good category, so it’s a good watch.

But speaking of good stuff, I rented the first volume of Mushishi and am in love. Anyone else watched this?

  26. I totally wrote a bigass Mushishi feature for Otaku USA!

Those games are just trying to be accurate to real life. For some top fighters every strike does major damage. For example, Kimbo Slice turned his opponent’s ear into hamburger last Saturday.

Every single thing you just said is completely absurd. First of all, none of those games is remotely realistic, nor are they even trying to be.

Soul Calibur is not trying to be accurate to reality because not only would one slash from any bladed weapon kill you, it has cybernetic ninjas with lightsabers, valkyrie maidens, and demon swords with eyes growing out of them.

Tekken is a game with cyborgs, bears, kangaroos, demons, and animated trees where throwing someone into an active volcano just makes them mad.

Dead or Alive is the poster child for characters designed by people who have never seen actual human breasts to know they don’t bounce like waterballoons, where people fall 2000 feet off cliffs and skyscrapers mid-fight only to get back up for more as they fight while surrounded by dinosaurs.

Even Virtua Fighter characters fly 200 feet into the air and float like feathers when you throw them.

If any of these games was trying to be even kind of realistic, it would be impossible to knock out your opponent with a kick to the ankle. That is not the objective. The high damage is a carryover from their lineage of being quarter munching arcade games. The shorter the round, the more money you have to pay. Well, I got news for you: the arcade is dead. At least let the rounds go Street Fighter length.

Oh, and your description of what happened in that Kimbo Slice bout is less than truthful. James Thompson had a very severe case of cauliflower ear going into the fight, and between him walking to the ring and the third round it grew visibly larger. That it burst during the fight in the third round given the already severe condition he was in is not a surprise, as the slightest contact would yield that result. As such, it is in no way evidence of the results of a power blow or the destructive might of jabs, and it is disingenuous to claim otherwise.

Throwing jabs, even at the heavyweight level, simply does not yield knockouts. For the closest example of what the realistic effect of just throwing jabs is, you can look at last night’s WEC show, actually. Miguel Angel Torres threw several jabs at Yoshihiro Maeda to win the fight at the end of the third round. But he didn’t KO Maeda. The repeated jabs to the right eye caused it to swell shut. That was after three rounds (15 minutes) of fighting.

So you see, even if these games WERE meant to be realistic, you should not be able to win a fight on nothing but “light” blows. If they’re not meant to be realistic, the fact that you can poke someone to death without being successor to Hokuto Shinken is symptomatic of a flawed approach to damage scaling. It is not an inherent flaw with 3D fighting games that cannot be remedied. They just all choose to do this by design, and it’s stupid.

  27. In my biased opinion, Air Master’s Sakiyami versus the wrestler ranks up as one of the more realistic fights in anime http://tinyurl.com/448y7c

Anyone read any of the manhwa Shaman Warrior? I’m not going to say it’s within a mile of realism, but the degree to which Park Joong-Ki pays attention to details like angles and distance is still amazing.

  28. Yo
    What up my G-UNIT’S!?!?

I have a quick question that is a bit off topic but I thinkl this is the best place to get some help.

Well one day I found the fourth volume of Planetes at my local big lots for TWO DOLLARS!!! I promptly bought it bast on what I had heard during the AWO.

I looked on Deep Discount.com and, the complete collection is avelibal four 32 dollars. The indevidual disc’s are 20 buck’s.
My question is witch one should I get? If I get the box set will I miss out on the extras. Any advise would be grate!!

  29. Apart from the broken promises over showering the internets with Gonad the Barbarian”, I got it in my mind I need to see Nobody’s Boy Remi since I have the dough for that, and wouldn’t you know it…
    http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2008-05-13/titlematch-halts-production-of-imaginasian-dvds

I hate myself and want to die!
(though this is obviously referencing a Nirvana tune, I think more of the Engrish T-shirt with it’s cheery disposition that makes the statement even more cathartic) Still it wouldn’t hurt if someone would forgo the BS and BT/eMule this for me, since I highly doubt this’ll ever get a release for a long time.

  30. Hay, anonimus, I think u shud get ALL tha Planetez dicss u can find cuz ther not bein made anymor and itz a totily OSUM SHOW u can sell extras on ebay and cleen up!

  31. Planetes has some very nice extras, but the series didn’t rock my world so I’d say to buy the cheap set, see if you go OMGAMAZING, and then go back and grab the singles with all the bonus goodies. Otherwise, you’re dropping a lot of cash on something you may not dig.

And I’ve got to admit, I’ve been meaning to see Wicked City ever since I won a T-Shirt of it at a con years ago, and listening to this review only makes me want to see it even more. Too bad it’s a pain to get at a decent price in the UK and Urban Visions are such a minor player these days.

Also, Cream Lemon fans may recall that the actress who played Ami was murdered shortly after the live action film was finished.

  32. Even Virtua Fighter characters fly 200 feet into the air and float like feathers when you throw them.

You’re thinking of Fighting Vipers there, Daryl-chan.

Also, as long as Tecmo still has Rio and Super Blackjack for the JP market, they’ll be a-ok.

  33. To this day I have never seen Overfiend

    WHAAAAAAAATTTTTTTTTT??????

And that is why damage in 3D fighting games and rape in Japanese porno are one and the same.

Okay, you’re still cool, Daryl Surat.

  34. As the only member of the AWO who likes Planetes, I could swear I covered this topic in a previous show. But since it’s not explicitly stated in the notes anywhere, here it is again:

The trouble with Planetes is that the brick does not in fact contain all of the extras that the original editions did. The first three volumes they released as special editions, with a second disc just for extras. Eventually they realized nobody was buying the show at all and the final three volumes were barebones. They’re very good extras, but the problem is that the brick containing the entire series is so incredibly cheap: $30 for the whole thing. Even if you could get used copies of the other five volumes for about $8-$10 each after shipping (which is about how much they run for on Amazon), it’s still a good bit cheaper to buy the brick. In light of that, I cannot easily justify you spending the extra cost on a series you may or may not end up liking.

Tomonobu Itagaki (aka Japanese Joey Snackpants) may be gone for the moment–as the only person in Japan who cares about the Xbox, I’m sure Microsoft or someone will bring him aboard–but it’s too late now since his influence has spread like a Hugo Weaving clone virus. Why, just lookit dem boobies in Soul Calibur 4. I think the ultimate joke would be if he somehow found himself working for either Bandai/Namco on Tekken or Capcom on Devil May Cry after all the shit he’s talked about them both over the years. Still, who in their right mind actually WANTS that dude for a boss? It can’t exactly be that great for employee morale when he’s constantly going on about how Ninja Gaiden Sigma sucks. For the record, the only PS3 game I own (until MGS4 anyway) is Ninja Gaiden Sigma. After having played the original as well as Black, I say that Sigma is pretty darn awesome.

You’re thinking of Fighting Vipers there, Daryl-chan.

I never bothered to play Fighting Vipers (never owned a Saturn, but they had it in one arcade over here) and was in fact referring to Virtua Fighter, especially guys like Kagemaru. Perhaps they changed that particular mechanic on account that Fighters Megamix (which I also didn’t play) let you specify VF or FV physics, but it has been well over ten years since I stopped even pretending to care about that entire franchise. For the record, Virtua Fighter is what INVENTED the whole “absurd damage from just hitting PPPP” trend I despise so emphatically.

PS: Vanessa sucks and she’s ugly too

chris: I’m sure you’ll find plenty of wonderful people willing to sell overpriced versions of those same sets on E-bay.

Thanks for the somewhat weighty encouragement, but so far I only see a couple boxes of Remi that aren’t subbed in English, nothing for Cat’s Eye and one for Orguss that is the HK pirate set (though I found it amusing to see the old US Renditions tapes are up for grabs).

No, I’d rather just get someone to make me copies of them anyway since that’s the only way out of this (and since my cable company may never pick up that ImaginAsian channel anyway). I so far found a pirate tracker with all the Orguss discs up for grabs, but I hate to waste my ratio getting all of ’em unless I don’t try seeding more stuff to balance that.

Probably a good reason I hadn’t gotten around to buying Planetes as I couldn’t decide over the singles or brick in the end. Even if I found a volume at Big Lots, it sure wouldn’t be the first volume, and I’d be stuck buying the other discs through other means to make up for that, and use up space that could go for a brick anyway. It’s annoying and dumb going through all that.

To this day I have never seen Overfiend

    WHAAAAAAAATTTTTTTTTT??????

Overfiend is overrated. Don’t get me wrong. I enjoyed watching Amano Jyaku and Suikakujyu telekinetically hurling cars at each other, but I don’t think it’s a “must see” anime show.
